While playing in the “Lab” today I found a section in the vSphere client, under “Configuration” called “IPMI/iLO Settings”:
Being an inquisitive fool, I clicked it and then properties:
It seems this will let you get/set the IPMI or iLO settings for the server. Unfortunately my home lab does not support either.
Those settings are for DPM (Distributed Power Management) control in vSphere. When servers need to be “woken up” after being powered off because of a DPM event, it's preferable to use IPMI or iLO rather than Wake On LAN, which can be troublesome

We have tested this extensively with HP c-Class 7000 Enclosures with HP 465 and 685 blades. It works exactly as promised. The settings for DPM with just a simple slider are a little rudimentary.
You can both IPMI or ILO for DPM as a wake-up protocol:

These settings are used with Distributed Power Management (DPM) to provide reliable ESX server power-on from standby.
In vCentre 2.5 ESX servers in standby were woken up with Wkake on LAN (WOL) packets, very unreliable.
With vCentre 4 the server's management processor does the task, WOL is still present as a last resort.
